Who makes you laugh?
Oh man, too many to name. I’ll go with 10 off the top of my head who’ve cracked me up recently: Gary Gulman, Nate Fridson, Casey James Salengo, Maria Bamford, Caleb Synan, Shalewa Sharpe, Jeff Caldwell, Patrick Schroeder, Damien Lemon, Joe List.
What’s the most overdone premise these days in comedy?
Hmmm, that’s hard to say. Sometimes I hear a certain premise a few times and get tired of it, but it could have been a coincidence; or perhaps I’m being a curmudgeon. From what I’ve noticed though, anytime there’s something that’s a relatively new thing (Tinder, autocorrect, etc.) a lot of comedians are going to talk about it, and a lot of those comedians are going to go with the first angle that comes to them, which is the first angle that comes to most people. So things become overdone before they’re even done sometimes. With anything like that, I always try to think about my coworkers when I worked in an office, and if I can picture one of them having that same angle on a topic, I don’t do it.
Which city has the funniest people?
I don’t want to start any wars, but going by numbers alone: New York. NYC has the most stand up, a lot of well established stand ups, and a lot of really funny stand ups who’ve moved here from other places. Also, I live in New York, so I’m biased. I am from Atlanta, and there are very funny comics there as well. There are actually a number of great comedy cities other than NY and LA, but I’ll keep my answer to NYC and ATL because, again, I’m biased.
Who in your life provides the most material?
Rarely can I attribute much material to a single person, BUT right now I have several jokes involving my girlfriend. I think that just comes from her being a person that’s around me a lot. I’m very careful to make sure she’s not always the butt of the joke because, again: she’s around a lot of the time.
What’s the funniest TV show or podcast out there?
First TV show that comes to mind for me right now is “See Your Pretty Face In Hell” on Adult Swim. Henry Zebrowski is one of the funniest/most talented people there is (even though I forgot to list him in that first answer). My favorite podcast right now is NYC Crime Report. Pat Dixon makes messed up shit hilarious, and the stuff they cover on there is really interesting to me. I don’t think you have to live in NY to enjoy it.
What’s next for yourself?
Right now, I am building and working on material for a thing that I can’t really talk about yet…also: sounding vague. Other than that, setting up a really long tour for 2015 and striving to be the person my momma raised me to be.
